About the course

The primary target group for this course is university and college students. The course is also open to anyone who wishes to improve their academic writing skills.

In this course, you will learn about:

  • The fundamental building blocks of academic writing, such as approach, argumentation, structure, and paragraphs.
  • How to initiate and carry out the writing process.
  • How to write shorter and longer academic texts in relevant genres, tailored to your level.
  • Relevant websites and AI tools that can assist you in the writing process in an ethical and efficient way.

Prerequisites

This course has no prerequisites.

IMPORTANT

Who are we?

AkS is developed by a course team from the University Library and Result at UiT The Arctic University of Norway:

Inga Bårdsen Tøllefsen. Senior Research Librarian and leader of the UiT Writing Centre. Passionate about academic writing at all levels and the interplay between writing instruction in disciplines and the services offered by the Writing Centre. Everyone can learn to write well, but it takes practice!

Cornel Borit. Senior Research Librarian and subject librarian for English, pedagogy and teachers' education, media- and documentation studies, and peace studies. One of the editors of PhD on Track and focused on information literacy and open education.

Ragnhild Bjørkås. Senior Research Librarian and subject librarian for physics and technology, and computer science. Educated in biology and pedagogy. Focused on open education, academic writing in the natural sciences, and research that contributes to preserving nature.

Christian Juri. Adviser at the University Library. Educated in information design and social anthropology. Focuses on user-oriented design, visual communication, and Open Educational Resources.

Mark Stenersen. Graphic designer and adviser in edTech and visual communication in online solutions. Main interests – everything is of interest!

Kristin Heggland. Biologist and previous member of the AkS course team. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Which web browser should I use?

The Open edX platform works best with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. It works, but not very well, on tablets and phones.

How do I take the exam?

The exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer 80% of them correctly to pass. Remember to retrieve your course certificate after completing the course if you are using AkS as a required coursework in your studies.
